Data Landmarks

In math we have been working with data landmarks.  We have been learning about maximum, minimum, range, median, and mode of a group of numbers.

We measured the circumference of our heads.
 We compiled our data.
The maximum head size was 60 cm and the minimum head size was 51 cm giving us a range of 9 cm.  The mode was 53 cm and the median was 55 cm.
We had fun with this activity as well as practicing our math skills.

Global Children's Challenge

Our Global Children's Challenge kicked off with a walk around the school grounds.  Our goal is to have an average of 15,000 steps each day.
We calculated that each time around the playground was 1/2 mile.
Today we will walk one time around the school grounds and tomorrow we will go for twice around.
If we keep doing this for the fifty days, we will be walking 25 miles.

Since Mrs. Wilson is not nearly as good a walker as the rest of the class I doubt  could make it around the playground 50 times!!!

Dot Day

We celebrated Dot Day on Friday, September 14th. Every year on or around September 15, educators around the world celebrate International Dot Day by making time to encourage their students’ creativity. Dot Day is based on Peter H. Reynolds’ award-winning book The Dot.

We decorated a sign with Ms. Hovey when we were in art, that greeted everyone as they came in the door.

When we were in music we made a class dot to hang from the ceiling.

Martha fixed us a delicious lunch with a lot of dots in it. We had dots in the soup, dots in the bread, and dots in the cookies. After lunch we came back to the room and played the dot game.

We talked about how you can make your mark on the world by making a difference in othe people's lives. We are ready to make our mark on the world.

"Sea" Our Personal Narratives

For the last couple of weeks we have been working on our personal narratives and they are now done, published, and displayed. Be sure and check them out when you are in the building. The kids have had a wide variety of experiences and did a very good job with their writing.

High Number Toss

We played High Number Toss today with a die and 4 blanks on a piece of paper to practice place value and practice making the highest number possible. We did very well at determining how to make the highest numbers. We will play this game a lot this year in various forms.
